Kidneys: Deep Sleep, Trust, and Origins

It isn’t just in your head. Bodies hold emotions, past experiences, and influence your perspective on the world. Thousands of years ago, people began to recognize the relationship between organs and emotional states, and developed practices to help balance these internal forces.

Near the darkest moment of Winter, we have an opportunity to relax into what Chinese medicine considers the mother of all other organs, the Kidneys. These two small but crucial organs located in the mid-back not only filter fluids and remove waste, but provide a home for deeply felt sensations related to identity and fear. They connect us to our biological ancestors, the origins of our life force, and simultaneously hold the key to our ability to dissolve into the deep trust of a good night’s sleep.

Insomnia is a uniquely distressing state. We may feel exhausted yet still not be able to fall asleep, often due to anxiety, racing thoughts, or an inability to sufficiently relax the body. Chinese organ theory understands this state as deficiency of the Kidneys, whose function includes the western concept of the adrenal glands. In this seasonal class, you’ll learn simple exercises to bring nourishment and vitality to the Kidneys, practices you can take home to assist with symptoms of stress and insomnia. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of the interconnection between body, mind, and emotions, and how to support your whole system with gentle movement, breath, and greater appreciation for the life you have.

Join us for the Winter session of our Organ Support Series. We’ll be focusing on Qi Gong and nourishing group practices to support the Kidneys. No experience necessary. All are welcome to attend.
