Heart: Claiming Sovereignty

It isn’t just in your head. Bodies hold emotions, past experiences, and influence your perspective on the world. Thousands of years ago, people began to recognize the relationship between organs and emotional states, and developed practices to help balance these internal forces.

Every body is sovereign. We each have an inborn right to self-determination within a deeply interconnected ecology that sustains our lives. Within the ecosystem of the body, the Heart is the seat of that sovereign self. The heartbeat provides a governing pulse for the physiological processes upon which it depends. It does not function in isolation. Similarly, we as individuals do not thrive alone. The Heart leads in determining what and who and when it wants to reach. It senses direction and where you need to go to find belonging. A clear Heart guides this impulse to extend yourself and make contact. It allows you to exert agency in the world without losing yourself. Personal sovereignty evolves by following the internal compass of the Heart.

When the Heart is able to act with clarity and knows its place and purpose, joy is a natural result. While the Heart is understood in Chinese medicine as the seer and knower of all emotions, it has a particular proclivity towards the buoyant sensations of happiness, contentment, and love. Getting comfortable with ourselves first, we’re able to extend love to the people and world around us. This is the gift of a healthy Heart.

Join us for the early Summer installment of our Organ Support Series. We’ll practice nourishing and clarifying the Heart through Qi Gong and somatic exploration. No experience necessary. All are welcome to attend.
