Lungs: Inspiration and Release
It isn’t just in your head. Bodies hold emotions, past experiences, and influence your perspective on the world. Thousands of years ago, people began to recognize the relationship between organs and emotional states, and developed practices to help balance these internal forces.
Life doesn’t get more simple than this: in-breath . . . out-breath . . . breathe in oxygen . . . exhale carbon dioxide. In this seasonal exploration of the body we’ll connect not just with breath, but the organ that makes it all possible: the Lungs. It’s easy to take life for granted, to lose touch with the basics. The Lungs bring us back to what is most essential, precisely because they require us to participate in the full cycle: filling and letting go, death and rebirth, moment after moment. When you know how to release, you also know how to make space for something new.
We don’t often think of grief as a discovery process, but giving something up, whether by chance or choice, creates an opening. In losing something or someone we love, negative space appears in place of what was once present and solid. There may be dissonance and disorientation in this transition, but the dissolution of something solid into liminal space creates the conditions necessary for change and transformation. Only by shedding old versions can you create opportunities to reform yourself. By supporting the Lungs, we familiarize ourselves with the reliable biological patterns of releasing the old in order to welcome what has yet to become.
Join us for the Autumn installment of our Organ Support Series. We’ll open and clear the Lungs through Qi Gong and group somatic practice. No experience necessary. All are welcome to attend.
