Kidneys: Holding and Moving the Fear

It isn’t just in your head. Bodies hold emotions, past experiences, and influence your perspective on the world. Thousands of years ago, people began to recognize the relationship between organs and emotional states, and developed practices to help balance these internal forces.

Near the darkest moment of Winter, we have an opportunity to relax into what Chinese medicine considers the mother of all other organs, the Kidneys. These two small but crucial organs located in the mid-back not only filter fluid and remove wastes, but provide a home for deeply felt sensations related to identity and fear. By learning to support this organ you can balance what may be experienced as anxiety and isolation with a sense of connection to all those who came before you, and discover a greater reservoir of resilience.

Fear has many faces. It may cause us to become angry and defensive when we perceive a threat to our survival. Standing before a glacier or above a waterfall, its contractive power may be combined with an expansive sense of reverence. Awe is defined as “a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder.” Outside of isolation, held within a container of wonder at the world, the constricted knot of fear dissolves into awe. Yes, the world is both beautiful and dangerous. Nobody can guarantee we will survive. This is the human condition. By softening the kidneys and connecting them to the larger ocean of life, we can practice experiencing fear in a new way.

Join us for the first of our monthly Saturday practice series. We’ll be focusing on Qi Gong and nourishing group practices to support the Kidneys. No experience necessary. All are welcome to attend.
