As spring shows the first signs of pushing forth into verdant growth, we too can discover the possibilities a fresh start has to offer. How are you feeling in your body these days? If you had a chance to change old patterns of movement and develop a new relationship with your body, would you take it?
Past experiences have shaped our current posture and movement patterns, including how we walk, sit, stand, and lie down. Within the body, we retain all the memories of earlier physical development and whatever injuries or traumas we sustained along the way. All these affect the overall experience we have in our bodies.
Pause and notice your internal sensations. Are there places that feel stuck, numb, or tight? Do you sense pressure, fullness, constriction, or heat? Pain and discomfort are often the result of stagnation, or restricted mobility, in muscles, joints, and surrounding fascia. Revisiting movements from earlier developmental stages allows you to reopen pathways that may have become blocked through sitting too much, chronic muscle tension, or past injuries and traumas. This class provides a series of practices to help you unwind these old patterns.
In Movement Fundamentals, we relearn how to walk as the basis for shifting the way we move through the world. We begin on the floor, easing muscle tension and reawakening gentle movement within the spine. We then increase mobility by releasing and lubricating the hip and shoulder joints. We work our way up to standing and walking, rebuilding our experience of the body by learning to sense our core and rely on our instincts.
Restoring softness and circulation within the body allows constricted tissues to open again. This spaciousness reintroduces blood and fluids that oxygenate, remove wastes, and enliven. Walking becomes a source of unexpected pleasure as you experience greater freedom of motion.
No previous experience is necessary and movements can be adapted for all bodies.
